BOSTON — Broad daylight. Downtown Crossing. Orange Line train. And a man in a Yankees cap and sunglasses turned a knife threat on a rider who stepped in to protect a young girl he was menacing, MBTA Transit Police say.
The department released two surveillance stills Tuesday on X and asked the public to name him.

Around 3:45 p.m. Friday, July 3, according to the department, the suspect was threatening a juvenile female on an Orange Line train at Downtown Crossing when another rider — an adult — asked him to stop. The suspect then "threatened to stab" the intervening adult, the department wrote. The charge sought is assault with a dangerous weapon — a knife.
Recognize him? MBTA Transit Police want a call. The Criminal Investigation Unit's line is 617-222-1050, and tipsters may remain anonymous.

Tuesday's post is the latest in a string of "recognize him?" pleas the Transit Police have put out on the MBTA this year. In June, the department released stills of a Patriots-shirt suspect who beat an elderly rider at Alewife. In May, they asked for help identifying a hooded man accused of groping a woman — and put out photos of a knife-wielding attacker on an Everett bus. Mass Daily News has tallied more than a dozen public MBTA crimes documented on the system since the start of the year.
Downtown Crossing is the Orange Line and Red Line transfer station at the heart of the Financial District. The Transit Police did not release the condition of either victim.
