BOSTON — A gunman is on the loose in Downtown Boston.
Boston Police detectives assigned to District A-1 released three surveillance stills Tuesday of the man they say opened fire in the Downtown Crossing area at approximately 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15 — a non-fatal shooting, per the BPD community alert, but a shooting all the same, at the exact hour rush-hour commuters are about to start pouring through the same corridor.
The suspect is pictured in a dark short-sleeve shirt, camo shorts, white sneakers, and a gray baseball cap turned skyward. In one of the three stills he is carrying what appears to be a beverage bottle as he walks down what looks like a Downtown Boston sidewalk in broad early-morning light.

The victim's condition was not specified in BPD's alert. The weapon was not identified. The direction of the suspect's flight was not disclosed. What the alert does say, in bold: "Anyone with information is strongly urged to contact District A-1 Detectives."

The pattern

This shooting comes less than a week after Mass Daily News reported on Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn calling out the Wu administration's BPD staffing crisis as Downtown Boston hit its fifth shooting in a matter of weeks. Add this one to the count.
