BOSTON — Massachusetts consumers are among the 27 states hit by a Taylor Farms recall of shredded iceberg lettuce over Cyclospora parasite contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The California-based produce supplier said it is "actively removing" the affected product and has suspended distribution of iceberg lettuce from Central Mexico to the United States. The recalled shredded iceberg product was distributed from June 29 through July 16 to 27 states.

Massachusetts is on the list. So are New Hampshire, Connecticut and every other Northeastern and mid-Atlantic state hit by the shipment — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Cyclospora is a microscopic, single-celled parasite found in human feces. When people eat food or drink water contaminated with the parasite, they can develop cyclosporiasis — an intestinal infection that most often shows up as diarrhea with frequent bowel movements. Cases can escalate to severe gastrointestinal illness and require medical treatment.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea after eating recalled lettuce products contact a physician. Symptoms typically appear about a week after infection.

Taylor Farms has not disclosed how many illnesses have been linked to the recalled lettuce. The FDA has not released a total case count as of Friday afternoon.
