BOSTON — A Roxbury resident was sitting on his couch Sunday evening when he found something buried in the cushions that did not belong there — a bullet.
Boston scanner-news account @StacoS, a reputable local police-scanner monitor whose incident reports are frequently first on the scene, reported at 6:10 p.m. Sunday that the caller had discovered ballistics inside his sofa, believed to be from the overnight rampage that left 13 people shot and 2 dead across five separate scenes in Roxbury and Dorchester.
The specific incident police were tracing the round to: the George Street mass shooting that killed one person and wounded five others.

The bullet's journey

The caller's home is near Shirley Street in Roxbury — just blocks from the 120 George Street scene where officers responded at 3:14 a.m. Sunday to a report of gunfire. When they arrived, they found three victims. Boston EMS transported them to hospitals, where one died and another was left in life-threatening condition. Three more victims from the same shooting walked into a hospital under their own power at 4:06 a.m.

That is the shooting police are now trying to link to the bullet lodged inside a stranger's sofa Sunday night.
According to StacoS, the Boston Police Department dispatched a unit Sunday evening to confirm the ballistics before notifying the department's Homicide Unit.

The overnight context

The overnight bloodshed the round is being traced to hit five locations between 11:54 p.m. Saturday and just after 4 a.m. Sunday:
  • 11:54 p.m. — 13 Fayston Street, Roxbury — one victim, serious injuries
  • 12:36 a.m. — 24 Horadan Way, Roxbury — one victim
  • 12:36 a.m. — 500 Blue Hill Avenue, Roxbury — four victims, one dead
  • 1:56 a.m. — 71 Draper Street, Dorchester — one victim
  • 3:14 a.m. — 120 George Street, Roxbury — six victims, one dead, one in life-threatening condition
Two dead. Thirteen shot. Four Roxbury scenes. One Dorchester scene. And, as of Sunday evening, one bullet lodged in a stranger's sofa in a home that had nothing to do with any of it.

Where the story lands

Mayor Michelle Wu and Police Commissioner Michael Cox held a Sunday press conference blaming the overnight shootings on the presence of firearms at large weekend gatherings. Neither Wu nor Cox addressed the department's staffing crisis, prosecutorial decisions, or the shooters themselves.
Sunday evening, one of those firearms — or a bullet from one — was found buried inside a Roxbury family's sofa.
