Earlier Friday evening, Cape Verde held Saudi Arabia to a draw at the World Cup, becoming the smallest nation ever to reach the tournament's knockout stage. The result drew thousands of Cape Verdean fans into the streets in Boston, in Brockton, and across the diaspora.
Brockton is home to the largest Cape Verdean community in the United States. Hundreds of fans gathered on Main Street to celebrate before the shooting.

The second Cape Verde World Cup gathering in New England this week to end in gunfire

The Friday night gunfire is the second time in less than a week that a Cape Verde World Cup celebration in Brockton has ended in shooting. On the night of Sunday, June 21, after Cape Verde drew 2-2 with Uruguay in the nation's first-ever World Cup match, multiple shootings broke out across downtown Brockton at five separate locations — Main Street at Hervey Street, Forest Avenue, Central Square, a second spot on Main Street, and Warren Avenue. Several people were injured in that round.
Brockton Police did not announce a direct connection between the June 21 celebration and the downtown shootings that followed. As of Saturday morning, they had not announced a connection between Friday night's celebration and the Main and Park streets shooting either.

What's been said and what hasn't

NBC Boston reported that "detectives are actively investigating." The Plymouth County District Attorney's office, which would handle prosecution if charges follow, has not yet released a statement. Brockton Police have not publicly identified a suspect or named a person of interest.
The intersection of Main and Park streets is in the heart of downtown Brockton, blocks from the Brockton Area Multi-Service plaza and within walking distance of city hall. Witnesses gathered on the sidewalks behind yellow tape into the early morning hours.
