MATTAPAN — Mabinty "Binty" Janneh, 32, of Dorchester had just stepped off a bus and was walking to a nearby bank Saturday afternoon when Ibraim Matos's stolen SUV came barreling down the sidewalk toward her.

She tried to get out of the way. So did the other pedestrians.
"Unfortunately, however, she could not outrun the defendant's car," Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Ursula Knight told the court Monday at Matos's arraignment. "She was overtaken by him."
Janneh was dragged beneath Matos's car for "several hundred feet," Knight said. Her body was "ultimately dislodged" only when Matos slammed the stolen vehicle into another car, and then into a Route 28 MBTA bus. The community pulled Matos out of the wreckage and held him on the pavement until Boston Police arrived.

Matos, 37, of Hyde Park, was arraigned Monday in Dorchester District Court on charges of murder, carjacking, and two counts of leaving the scene of a crash. Judge Erika Reis ordered him to undergo psychiatric evaluation at the state's Bridgewater hospital. His next court appearance is set for July 10.

A long domestic record

Court records show Matos has a long Boston-area criminal history — MDN reviewed 17 of his Boston Municipal Court dockets yesterday and found a pattern of dropped or suspended charges spanning gun possession, domestic violence, and a felony strangulation. Prosecutors told Judge Reis his previous charges are "largely domestic in nature," with several restraining orders issued against him.

A court-appointed psychologist who conducted a preliminary evaluation Monday morning testified that Matos seemed confused when she walked him through the charges, and became "overwhelmed and tearful" during their interaction. She said Matos reported a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, and mentioned possible schizophrenia and past psychiatric hospitalizations.
She recommended further evaluation.

"She was loved"

A large group of Janneh's relatives filled the Dorchester courtroom gallery Monday. Afterward, on the courthouse steps, her cousin made a brief statement as family members stood by in tears.
"We are still saddened, shocked, and disturbed about this event and the loss of our loved one," the cousin said. "We would like to thank the Mattapan community for intervening and preventing more loss of life."
He closed by asking that the family be left to grieve.

"The peril posed by this man's actions"

Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden, in a statement Monday, did not mince words.
"It's impossible to overstate the peril posed by this man's actions when so many people were out and about enjoying a beautiful summer Saturday," Hayden said. "We will do everything possible to secure justice for Mabinty 'Binty' Janneh, for all those who loved her, and for the entire Mattapan community."

The car wash

The rampage started just before 2 p.m. Saturday with a minor crash at Blue Hill Avenue and Woodhaven Street. Matos abandoned his own damaged car and ran south to the Fernandez X-Press Car Wash at 1480 Blue Hill Avenue, where the Boston Globe interviewed the owner.

Yancarlo Fernandez, 36, who owns the car wash, wasn't on site at the moment of the carjacking but said his staff called him as it unfolded. According to Fernandez, Matos first tried to get into a different vehicle in the lot — but found the door locked. He turned to the woman waiting in her car next door, dragged her out, and took off the wrong way up Blue Hill Avenue toward Mattapan Square.
That's the car that hit Janneh.

Mabinty "Binty" Janneh did not make it to the bank Saturday. Matos's next court date is July 10.
