BARNSTABLE — A Wellfleet Post Office worker accused of possessing more than 200 files of child sex abuse material on his digital devices and of distributing more than 100 of them to an undercover Barnstable Police investigation was released from Barnstable District Court on Thursday on just $2,500 cash bail.
Ross Hannon, 43, of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, was arraigned on charges of Distributing Material of a Child in a Sexual Act and Possession of Child Pornography, according to a Barnstable Police Department announcement on Facebook. The case is being prosecuted by the Cape & Islands District Attorney's Office.

The investigation

The Barnstable Police Department's Investigative Services Division initiated an online investigation on March 24, 2026 targeting offenders sharing child sex abuse material online. During that investigation, investigators identified a digital device using an IP address tied to a Wellfleet residence as it disseminated more than 100 digital files of child sex abuse material to a computer located inside the Barnstable Police Department's Forensics Lab.

Barnstable detectives coordinated with the United States Secret Service New England Cyber Fraud Task Force, the United States Postal Service Office of the Inspector General, and the Wellfleet Police Department before executing a court-authorized search warrant at the Wellfleet residence linked to the IP address.
Hannon was encountered on the property by investigators as he returned home from his employment at the Wellfleet Post Office. Investigators located and seized numerous pieces of digital evidence at the scene for further forensic examination.

What forensic analysis found

Subsequent forensic analysis of Hannon's digital devices revealed more than 200 files of child sex abuse material, according to Barnstable Police, as well as the program he allegedly used to disseminate the files that earlier ended up at the Barnstable Police Forensics Lab.
Based on the forensic findings, investigators applied for and were granted an arrest warrant through Barnstable District Court.

$2,500 cash bail and conditions of release

Following his arraignment on Thursday, Hannon posted $2,500 cash bail and walked out of the courthouse. Conditions of his release include no contact with individuals 16 years of age or younger and no travel outside the Commonwealth of Massachusetts without prior court authorization.
Hannon's employment status with the Wellfleet Post Office is not stated in the Barnstable Police announcement. The United States Postal Service Office of the Inspector General was among the federal agencies that assisted Barnstable Police in the investigation.
