WINTHROP — ICE Boston has pulled another illegal immigrant off Massachusetts streets, federal agents arresting Salvadoran national Anilber Gustavo Marquez in Winthrop — a man whose record, per the agency, includes prior arrests for armed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and dealing narcotics.
ICE Boston announced the Winthrop arrest Tuesday morning on X, describing Marquez as a "criminal illegal alien from El Salvador."

According to the agency, Marquez's prior arrests in Massachusetts include larceny, armed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of narcotics with intent to distribute. ICE added that Marquez had been the subject of a protection order tied to improper storage of a firearm while in possession of narcotics.

ICE keeps cleaning up what Beacon Hill won't

Massachusetts has spent the year refining the art of looking the other way. Governor Maura Healey's administration and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu have publicly distanced themselves from federal immigration enforcement at every available opportunity — even as ICE keeps producing arrest after arrest of illegal immigrants with violent rap sheets racked up in the Commonwealth.
In August, MDN reported that Wu — the same mayor who built her political brand on sanctuary policies — quietly applied for $12 million in federal funding that comes with an ICE cooperation requirement. Winthrop was one of the BRIC partner cities flagged in the pushback to that move.
The Marquez pickup is the kind of routine ICE Boston arrest that rarely makes Beacon Hill talking points but steadily stacks up week after week: an illegal immigrant with a string of serious arrests already through the local court system, gathered up by federal agents and handed a one-way ticket back to where he came from.
For now, Marquez sits in ICE custody. Removal proceedings are next.
