BOSTON — Another downtown name is coming off the door. Scholars American Bistro and Cocktail Lounge, the 25 School Street fixture that has held its corner of Downtown Crossing for the better part of fifteen years, is closing — permanently, after this weekend.
The closure was first reported on May 13 by Boston Restaurant Talk, the long-running local restaurant blog, citing announcements in the "Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants" Facebook group and Scholars' own website. Per Boston Restaurant Talk, the School Street spot "will shutter permanently after this weekend."

Scholars opened in 2011 at 25 School Street in Downtown Crossing — two blocks from Boston Common, a block from Old City Hall. It served regional American cuisine alongside beer, wine, and cocktails, ran semi-private dining for groups, and turned the room over at night with karaoke and DJs. Fifteen years on the same corner is, by any honest measure of the restaurant business, a serious run.
If you spent time downtown in the early-to-mid 2010s, you spent some of it at Scholars. Late dinner, a few drinks, the music going. It was a vibe — a real downtown nightlife stop on a stretch of the city that had a habit of going quiet at 9 p.m. It has been a while. The room thinned, like a lot of downtown rooms have. But the vibe was there, and it was good while it lasted.

After this weekend, it will be gone.
Fifteen years on the corner of School Street. Lights out after Sunday.
