CHELSEA — A man armed with two knives threatened a school bus dropping off children at a Chelsea daycare Tuesday morning — then barricaded himself inside his apartment, triggering a multi-agency response that included Metro SWAT, the FBI, a police negotiator, and a contracted social worker.
Chelsea police responded to 90 Chestnut Street around 8 a.m. on April 22 after receiving reports of a resident making threats toward the school bus. When officers arrived, they found the suspect holding two knives. He retreated into his apartment and refused to come out.

A shelter-in-place order went up for surrounding homes. The nearby daycare was evacuated. Then the cavalry arrived: Metro SWAT, a trained police negotiator, the Chelsea Fire Department, Emergency Management, and the FBI's Boston Division — along with a contracted social worker, according to the Chelsea Record.
The negotiator eventually talked the man out of his apartment. He surrendered without incident and was taken into custody, then transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for a psychiatric evaluation.

No children were harmed. Criminal charges are forthcoming, according to Chelsea police, though the suspect's name has not been released. The shelter-in-place was lifted and all roadways reopened later Tuesday morning.
Chelsea PD thanked all responding agencies for the peaceful resolution — which, for anyone keeping score, required a SWAT team, the FBI, a fire department, an emergency management unit, a negotiator, and a social worker to resolve a man with two knives at a daycare.
