BOSTON — The Boston Police Patrolmen's Association didn't mince words. Days after DA Kevin Hayden charged one of their own with manslaughter for fatally shooting a career criminal during a carjacking, the union posted a message on social media that read like a declaration of war.
"HELP WANTED," the BPPA wrote. "Anyone interested in running for Suffolk County District Attorney should start collecting signatures ASAP."
The post included a link to the state's candidate guide and noted the deadline: April 28.

The union didn't mention Officer Nicholas O'Malley by name. They didn't have to.
O'Malley, 33, was charged with voluntary manslaughter last Thursday for the March 11 fatal shooting of Stephenson King, 39, of Dorchester. King had 47 prior charges including strangulation, breaking and entering, and firearms offenses. He was out on bail for four felonies and had an active warrant at the time of the shooting.
The union previously called the prosecution "outrageous" and accused Hayden's office of "Monday morning quarterbacking." Dozens of officers flooded Roxbury District Court during O'Malley's arraignment in a striking show of support.

A GoFundMe for O'Malley's family has raised over $400,000 from more than 3,100 donors.
Hayden, a Democrat who is running for reelection, was previously fined for dirty campaign tactics and has faced criticism for letting sex offenders slip through the cracks. Mayor Michelle Wu praised Hayden for the "urgency" of the prosecution.
The BPPA's post signals that the rank and file aren't just angry about the O'Malley charge. They want the man who brought it replaced.
Candidates for Suffolk County DA have until April 28 to collect the required signatures.
