COHASSET — A Massachusetts man who allegedly set himself up in a second-floor window above his garage to pick off coyotes ended up shooting his wife's 14-year-old dog in the head as the animal stood in the driveway below, police said.
Christopher Lucas, 59, of Cohasset was arrested on Sunday and charged with animal cruelty, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, hunting without a license, and hunting out of season.
The shooting happened on August 16, 2025, at the family's home on Hillside Drive in Cohasset, a quiet coastal town on the South Shore about 25 miles south of Boston.
According to investigators, Lucas was firing from a room above his garage, allegedly trying to take down coyotes in the area. Instead, the bullet struck Lise, a 14-year-old pet dog that belonged to his wife, hitting the animal in the head while it was in the driveway.

The home's security cameras captured the whole thing. Police say the footage shows the dog being shot and a family member rushing out and breaking down in tears over the dying animal.
It took seven months, but Cohasset Police detectives, working alongside the Massachusetts Environmental Police, built a case and brought charges.
Investigators found that the home sits within 500 feet of several occupied dwellings. Lucas did not have a valid Massachusetts hunting license at the time, and the shooting occurred well outside of the legal hunting season.
His license to carry firearms has been suspended. Police seized multiple firearms from the residence.
Lucas is being held at the Cohasset Police Department on $1,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning in Quincy District Court.
"This was a deeply disturbing incident that involved the unlawful discharge of a firearm in a residential neighborhood and the tragic killing of a family pet," said Chief William Quigley. "Our detectives conducted a thorough and professional investigation to ensure that the facts were carefully documented and that appropriate charges were pursued."
