BOSTON — It’s the kind of place that sells itself as pure Beacon Hill glam: velvet-rope vibes, a buzzing lobby bar, and rooms that can run into the four figures when demand spikes.

But now Boston’s swanky Liberty Hotel — the famous former Charles Street Jail turned Luxury Collection hotspot — is facing a lawsuit demanding more than $10 million after a couple says a night out ended with a jaw-dropping accusation inside the women’s bathroom.

Ansley Baker and her partner Liz Victor, who say a night out at Boston’s Liberty Hotel spiraled into a bathroom confrontation — and a $10 million lawsuit.

Ansley Baker and her partner, Liz Victor, filed suit claiming Baker was mistaken for a man while using the women’s restroom at the hotel on May 3 — and that what followed was not just embarrassing, but legally actionable.

According to the lawsuit, the couple says they were confronted in the bathroom by a male security guard who accused Baker of being a man and ordered them out. The complaint claims the situation escalated into a humiliating scene, with the couple alleging they were treated as if they didn’t belong — and ultimately left shaken and distressed by the encounter.

The filing accuses the hotel and others of discrimination and defamation, among other claims, and seeks damages in excess of $10 million — a figure that, if awarded, would be an enormous payday for the couple.

The Liberty Hotel has strongly pushed back.

In statements reported publicly, the hotel has said it acted in response to a reported situation and disputes the claim that the couple was targeted because of appearance or sexual orientation. The hotel has said it intends to defend itself.

The lawsuit also comes with baggage from earlier fallout: after the incident, the couple pursued a discrimination complaint, and the hotel later agreed to take steps including a $10,000 donation to an LGBTQ nonprofit and other measures as part of a resolution of that complaint.

But the courtroom fight didn’t end there — because now the couple is taking the battle to civil court, turning an alleged bathroom blowup at one of Boston’s most scene-y, headline-friendly hotels into a full-blown legal war.

And the setting only adds to the spectacle.

This is not some random roadside motel. The Liberty is a high-profile Boston destination known for its dramatic architecture and history — a former jail reimagined as a luxury property — drawing locals and tourists for drinks, events, and the “see-and-be-seen” atmosphere.

Now, instead of cocktail photos and weekend crowds, the hotel is staring down a case that puts a harsh spotlight on a single moment in a women’s restroom — and a demand for eight figures that could turn a night out into the most expensive bathroom dispute Boston has seen in a long time.
