BOSTON — Gov. Maura Healey is accusing President Trump of turning the Justice Department into a political weapon after reports that federal prosecutors are preparing subpoenas for Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

“Let’s call this what it is — a complete abuse of power. Donald Trump is using the Justice Department to target and intimidate those who speak out against him, and no one is safe. Every American who cares about justice and freedom should be outraged,” Healey wrote.

The subpoenas are tied to a Justice Department criminal investigation into allegations that Walz and Frey impeded federal immigration enforcement in the Twin Cities — a probe that reportedly focuses on whether state and city officials crossed the line from criticizing ICE to obstructing federal agents.

Maura Healey calls it a “complete abuse of power” after reports Trump’s DOJ is preparing subpoenas tied to a probe of Minnesota leaders.

The backdrop is Minneapolis, a city that has become synonymous with street chaos and political unrest. It’s the same place Americans watched spiral during the 2020 riots, and it’s now back in the spotlight as anti-ICE protests and clashes flare again.

This time, the standoff has been so volatile that a federal judge stepped in and issued restrictions on immigration agents’ tactics toward peaceful protesters and observers, a sign that the situation on the ground has turned into a legal and political minefield.

To Healey and other Democrats, the subpoenas look like intimidation — a warning shot aimed at officials who refuse to fall in line with the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

To the feds, the allegation is sharper: that leaders in Minnesota didn’t just complain about ICE, they allegedly interfered with federal law enforcement’s ability to do its job.

Either way, the message is clear. Minneapolis isn’t just a city wrestling with disorder — it’s the test case for a new national collision between sanctuary politics and federal enforcement, and the next subpoena could land anywhere.
