BOSTON — The MBTA was thrown into full-blown chaos Thursday after a 61-year-old woman was pushed onto the Green Line tracks at North Station in a stunning mid-afternoon attack that has left Boston rattled and officials scrambling for answers.

Transit Police say the woman was shoved from behind by a man who they believe is a homeless individual known to frequent the area. The victim plunged into the track pit during active service, forcing emergency crews to race into action as trains continued to move through the system. Police say she was not in immediate danger of being struck, but the violent fall sent her to a local hospital. Her condition has not been released.

The dramatic rescue was first reported by 7News, whose cameras captured the woman being rushed into an ambulance as stunned riders looked on. Within minutes, Transit Police had launched a station-wide sweep and expanded the search into the surrounding streets, pulling surveillance video and hunting for the attacker now on the run.

The harrowing incident has poured gasoline on an already-raging fire engulfing the MBTA’s reputation. In just recent weeks, Transit Police have issued multiple alerts — including their search for a pajama-wearing man wanted for an indecent assault on a Red Line shuttle bus, random assaults, and armed teens just to name a few incidents — as violent, bizarre, and unpredictable incidents continue to pile up across Boston’s transit network.

Riders have watched the system transform from a daily inconvenience into a rolling crime scene, with police investigating assault after assault as state officials remain largely silent about the spiraling conditions.

Thursday’s track-pushing attack marks one of the most alarming episodes yet in a system critics say is teetering on the edge of collapse. A vulnerable rider, shoved from behind in a major station, in the middle of the day — it's the kind of nightmare scenario transit officials have long feared but appear unable to stop.

As of Thursday evening, the suspect remained at large. The investigation is ongoing. And the MBTA’s crisis continues to deepen.
