SCITUATE, RI— A Rhode Island man turned a quiet Tuesday morning into a full-blown demolition derby after blasting through a red light at an estimated 80 mph, mowing into traffic, and sending his gold Chevy Malibu flying into a tree — all while allegedly packing a pantsful of fentanyl and cocaine.
The chaos erupted around 9:31 a.m. at the intersection of Hartford Pike and Chopmist Hill Road, where officers first received word of a three-car crash. They arrived to find four mangled vehicles instead — including one shoved roughly 50 feet off the road and resting against a tree like a discarded toy.
Witnesses told police the Malibu’s driver, 34-year-old Scott Jones of Woonsocket, was weaving through cars moments before impact, gunning his sedan around stopped traffic at a red light and barreling head-on into another vehicle. Several bystanders also reported seeing Jones frantically “stuffing something into his pants” as he staggered around the crash scene.

When officers reached him, they say the answer became obvious. Jones — already operating on a suspended Massachusetts license — was detained while being treated for injuries. A search incident to arrest revealed multiple bags of suspected narcotics concealed in his clothing.
Subsequent testing confirmed he was allegedly carrying a sizable stash of cocaine and fentanyl, along with counterfeit Xanax pills also laced with fentanyl. Authorities say the total weight came to approximately 221 grams, and even more narcotics surfaced later during his hospital treatment.
Miraculously, no serious injuries were reported among the other drivers caught in the Malibu’s path.

Jones, a familiar name to Scituate police — with an August DUI arrest and a September bust for driving with a suspended license — was arraigned at Rhode Island Hospital by a Justice of the Peace and ordered held without bail.
He now faces charges including manufacture/possession/delivery of cocaine, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license (second offense), and possession of Schedule I–V controlled substances. Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
