WOBURN, MASS. — Federal agents have arrested a Stoneham man accused of planting a pipe bomb that blew apart an ATM outside a Woburn bank — a midnight blast that rattled the quiet North Shore city and triggered a full-scale FBI investigation.
Agents say Christopher Silva is charged with maliciously damaging property used in interstate commerce after the September 4 explosion at the Eastern Bank on Mishawum Road.
The blast destroyed the ATM, scattering debris across the drive-thru lane. Surveillance video shows a masked man in goggles and a blue face covering placing an object on the machine before walking away. Seconds later, the pipe bomb detonated.

Investigators spent weeks piecing together footage from nearby businesses before tracing the suspect back to Silva’s home on San Jose Terrace in Stoneham. When agents searched the property Wednesday morning, they found clothing and a backpack matching the suspect’s outfit — and say Silva had Googled news stories about the explosion.
He was arrested by an FBI-led task force with assistance from state and local police. Officials said there was no ongoing threat to the public during the operation.
Silva faces federal charges that could carry up to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors have not disclosed a motive, but police say the device was a deliberately planted pipe bomb, not an accident or prank.
Eastern Bank closed the damaged ATM while federal bomb technicians combed through the debris.
The arrest caps a month-long manhunt for the masked suspect whose late-night explosion turned a routine Woburn bank stop into a federal crime scene.
