EVERETT — A 13-year-old migrant accused of flashing a knife and threatening another student in Everett has been locked up in ICE custody after a judge branded him a flight risk — despite pleas for forgiveness.
Arthur Berto, a Brazilian national who entered the U.S. with his family in 2021, appeared before a judge over Zoom from a Virginia detention center, where he begged to go home and told the court he missed his mother, The Boston Globe reported.
But the judge wasn’t buying it — denying bond and keeping the teen in federal custody.

Police say Berto was arrested October 9 after allegedly threatening to kill a classmate and carrying a knife near school grounds. What started as a local scare quickly spiraled into a federal case once his fingerprints hit a national database — flagging him to immigration agents.
Soon after, ICE swooped in. The 13-year-old was transferred hundreds of miles away to a juvenile facility in Virginia — far from his mother and the Massachusetts community where the case began.
Federal sources have since linked Berto to the notorious “33” gang, a label that paints an even darker picture of the middle-schooler’s alleged double life. Officials haven’t filed formal gang-related charges, but DHS called him a “suspected member,” citing safety concerns.
His family insists he’s just a scared kid caught up in the system — not a criminal. They say he came to America seeking safety, not trouble. But prosecutors aren’t taking chances.
For now, the Everett teen remains in custody — a 13-year-old migrant locked in federal detention, accused of threats, gang ties, and a weapon that turned a schoolyard scuffle into an immigration showdown.
