SWANSEA — A rambunctious 14-year-old girl at a Massachusetts school for troubled teens allegedly kicked a staff member so hard she later died, turning a midweek meltdown into a horrific tragedy.

The violence erupted Wednesday night at Meadowridge Academy in Swansea — a residential treatment school for high-risk youth — after the teen tried to leave her dorm without permission. Staff stepped in to stop her, but the confrontation spiraled out of control.

Prosecutors say the girl lashed out and kicked 53-year-old staffer Amy Morrell square in the chest. Morrell, a longtime caretaker from Riverside, Rhode Island, collapsed moments later as stunned colleagues rushed to perform CPR and call 911.

Paramedics took Morrell to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead the following day. The 14-year-old, whose name is being withheld because of her age, was charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and arraigned Thursday in Fall River Juvenile Court.

In a statement, Meadowridge Academy said:

“The Meadowridge Academy community is deeply saddened by the passing of direct care staff member, Amy Morrell. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Amy’s family during this difficult time. Support services and resources are available to assist students and staff as we grieve this tragic loss.”

According to the school’s website, Meadowridge Academy serves students ages 12 to 22 who face emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges. The residential program provides therapy, education, and support in a structured environment.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said the investigation remains active and that additional evidence will be presented in juvenile court.
