MALDEN, Mass. — A Massachusetts man detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents last month is back home on bond after nearly a month in custody.
An immigration judge granted bond to Edgar Hernan Elias Escobar of Malden on October 9 with help from Greater Boston Legal Services. Two days later, he was reunited with his family.
His wife Leslie Perlera Gonzalez said she and her husband will be “forever grateful” for the support they received. “Hernan’s legal fight to remain in the U.S. isn’t over, but he is home where he belongs with me, Albert, our dog, and our extended family,” she told WCVB. “Not for one moment did we feel alone. We think this outpouring of support is a testament to the kind of man Hernan is, and how from the start he has been a positive force in the community.”
Gonzalez thanked several officials for their help, including Gov. Maura Healey, Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, Attorney General Andrea Campbell, and Malden Mayor Gary Christensen.
Escobar is due back in immigration court in March 2026, where the federal government is seeking to remove him from his I-130 petition that allows him to apply for a green card as the spouse of a U.S. citizen.
“We love this country very much; we have made a home here in Massachusetts,” Gonzalez told WCVB. “We want to start a family and continue to contribute to our community. We are hopeful that at the end of this process, we will be able to realize that dream.”
Escobar was pulled over by ICE agents in Malden on September 17 while driving his white pickup truck. Video from that day shows agents smashing his window and pulling him through it.
“After they shattered the window, they tried to yank him out of the car,” Gonzalez told WCVB. “They grabbed him by his left arm, and his head snapped back.”
Escobar was later seen on a stretcher being taken to a hospital with blood streaming down his arm.
ICE called Escobar “an illegal alien from El Salvador” and said in a statement: “During the arrest, the illegal alien refused to comply with officer commands to roll down his window. The officers took appropriate action and followed their training to use the minimum amount of force necessary to resolve the situation.”
