BOSTON â President Donald Trump sent shockwaves through Boston on Tuesday, threatening to pull next yearâs World Cup matches from the city â and blasting Mayor Michelle Wu for letting âradical leftâ policies turn it into a mess.
Trump, meeting with Argentinaâs president, didnât hold back when asked about Wu â calling her âintelligentâ but âradical leftâ and saying parts of the city had been âtaken overâ by unrest.
âI love the people of Boston,â Trump said. âBut your mayor is not good. We could take [the games] away.â

The games themselves will be played at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, but Boston â the regionâs main tourist hotspot â would serve as the face of the event. Trump made clear thatâs exactly what worries him. âIf I feel there are unsafe conditions,â he said, âIâd call Gianni â the head of FIFA â and say, âLetâs move it,â and theyâd do it.â
His comments came after a violent pro-Palestinian riot on the Boston Common left four police officers injured â a scene critics say shows just how far the city has fallen under Wu.
Trumpâs warning sent City Hall scrambling, as his allies praised him for standing up for public safety and calling out leaders whoâve lost control.
FIFA technically controls the final host list, but Trumpâs words carry weight: the U.S. president remains a key figure in international negotiations surrounding the 2026 tournament, co-hosted with Mexico and Canada.
No response yet from Mayor Wu, whose administration has already been under fire for crime, staffer scandals, and illegal immigration.
