BOSTON — Gunfire shattered the calm of a Monday afternoon in Roxbury, leaving a woman dead and police scrambling to track down the shooter.

Officers rushed to 1855 Washington Street around 1 p.m. after reports of shots fired. They found an adult woman hit by gunfire and rushed her to the hospital — but doctors couldn’t save her.

Moments later, flashing lights filled the block as homicide detectives arrived to begin piecing together what happened. Washington Street was lined with cruisers as officers combed the scene for evidence in the city’s latest act of daytime violence.

The victim’s identity has not been released, and no arrests have been made.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit at (617) 343-4470, or to submit an anonymous tip by calling 1-800-494-TIPS or texting “TIP” to CRIME (27463).

The Neighborhood Trauma Team is offering support for residents shaken by the killing at (617) 431-0125.
