WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — A newly hired high-school custodian has been hauled off in handcuffs after investigators say they uncovered a trove of child pornography tied to his online account.
Police arrested 25-year-old Luis Guncay-Barros this week after a months-long cyber-crime probe triggered by a National Center for Missing and Exploited Children tip. Detectives traced the digital trail to a Westborough address and, according to investigators, found shocking material in his personal cloud storage.
Guncay-Barros had joined Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School barely two weeks earlier, working the 3 p.m.–11 p.m. custodial shift. District officials say he passed every required background check — including a CORI review — and had “limited contact with students.” Still, the revelation has left parents furious that someone accused of such crimes ever cleared the system.
In a statement, Assabet Valley administrators called the allegations “deeply disturbing” and confirmed the employee has been placed on paid administrative leave. “There is no indication the charges involve Assabet students or staff,” the district insisted.
The bust was carried out by the Massachusetts State Police Cyber Crime Unit, joined by the U.S. Secret Service and Westborough Police. Guncay-Barros was arraigned in Westborough District Court on child-pornography charges and remains in custody.
For now, investigators are combing through the suspect’s devices while the school district faces mounting questions over how a man at the center of a federal-level probe managed to slip through every background check in the book.
