BOSTON — The faces of Boston’s most wanted are now out in the open. Police have released surveillance photos of a pack of men they say turned Mattapan's River Street into a blood-soaked crime scene, leaving a gay couple ambushed, battered, and one man rushed to the hospital with a gaping head wound.

The September 13 late-night horror began with slurs. According to police, the couple was taunted with vile homophobic abuse before the group allegedly armed themselves with bat-like weapons and charged. One victim was smashed in the skull and collapsed in a parking lot, blood pouring onto the pavement. His partner, still reeling, was taken to the station to give detectives a statement.
Now cops are flooding the city with photos of the suspects. Some images show men in hoodies and ball caps, others in bright red shorts, one in a black tracksuit, another in a maroon shirt coolly holding bottles inside a convenience store. Detectives say these are the men wanted for questioning as the hate-crime probe accelerates.
So far, no arrests have been made — a chilling reality for Boston families who see a hate-fueled mob caught on camera, yet still roaming free.
And while the blood was still drying on River Street, Mayor Michelle Wu repeated her line that Boston is the “safest big city in America.” Tell that to the man who was rushed to the hospital with his head split open. Tell that to the residents now staring at police photos of baseball bat–swinging suspects still on the run.
