BOSTON LOGAN—Passengers screamed. Cameras rolled. And for a few terrifying seconds, Logan Airport looked like the set of a disaster movie.
On Tuesday night, a Swiss Air Lines jet bound for Zurich roared down the runway when its right engine suddenly coughed, sputtered — and spewed fire like a dragon with indigestion. Video shot by stunned onlookers shows bright orange flames shooting from the engine as the giant Airbus tried to lumber into the air.
The pilots slammed the brakes before liftoff, grinding to a halt as fire trucks swarmed the runway. A brief ground stop froze arrivals into Boston while the would-be transatlantic flight turned back to the gate under its own power. No injuries were reported — though passengers’ nerves were thoroughly fried.

The FAA, in its usual calm monotone, said only: “The crew of SWISS Flight 55 stopped their takeoff at Boston Logan International Airport due to engine issues.” Translation: the plane nearly became a $300 million bonfire in front of horrified travelers.
Witness Marc Richards snapped photos of fire trucks racing toward the wounded aircraft. The Zurich-bound passengers were eventually moved to other flights, leaving the damaged plane to sulk at the gate while Logan scrambled to get back on schedule.

Massport confirmed a temporary ground stop was ordered while firefighters checked the jet, which — somewhat insultingly — managed to taxi back on its own like nothing happened.
Still, the viral video doesn’t lie: flames poured from the engine as hundreds watched.
For one night at Logan, Boston got its very own “Snakes on a Plane” moment — except the snakes were jet fuel and the screams were very real.
