A Boston police officer was shot in the arm and a gunman hit multiple times after a wild midnight firefight ripped through Roxbury, turning Kenilworth Street into a crime-scene circus of flashing lights, yellow tape, and gun smoke.
The mayhem began around 12:45 a.m. when officers rolled up on a group of “suspicious people” near Dudley and Washington streets. As they approached, one man bolted. Officers gave chase, sprinting after him through the darkened neighborhood.
Moments later, the suspect allegedly pulled out a high-capacity pistol with an extended magazine and opened fire. One officer was struck in the arm. Police shot back, hitting the man several times before tackling him into custody.

Both the officer and the suspect were rushed to separate hospitals with what officials described as non-life-threatening injuries. Four additional officers were also taken to the hospital for reasons police have not yet explained.
The suspect — who has not yet been named — remains under arrest at the hospital. Police say they recovered the high-capacity weapon at the scene.
Police Commissioner Michael Cox, who responded personally, said the shootout underscored the gun epidemic plaguing Boston’s streets.

“This is another example of the amount of guns that are out here,” Cox said. “We’re very lucky there was no loss of life today.”
Investigators with the firearms discharge unit spent hours combing Kenilworth Street for evidence as dawn broke. The identity of the wounded officer has not been released.
The case remains under investigation.
