BOSTON — Police have identified the man accused of blasting a Boston cop during a midnight chase through Roxbury — and say he was caught red-handed with a gun and bags of a suspicious “rock-like substance” spilling from his pockets.

Investigators say the suspect, 31, opened fire on officers just before 1 a.m. Friday after bolting from a group loitering in a Dudley Street park. The chase tore through Washington Street, Archer Terrace and Kenilworth Street before ending in a hail of gunfire.

One officer was shot in the arm. Three others were also injured in the chaos, all treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times in the legs and dropping him to the pavement.

Police say the shooter’s high-capacity pistol with an extended magazine was recovered at the scene, along with two bags of a “white, rock-like substance” that tumbled out during the pursuit.

“Tonight is another reminder of the kinds of risks our officers face 24 hours a day,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said in a statement praising the response.

The suspect has been charged with attempted murder, firearms offenses and possession of Class B drugs. He remains hospitalized under police guard before facing arraignment.
