BOSTON — Rules for thee, gas for me? That’s the recipe Mayor Michelle Wu just cooked up in Boston’s latest hypocrisy scandal.
The self-styled Climate Queen has spent the past two years waging war on natural gas — vowing to rip it out of public housing, banning it from new city buildings, and pushing a climate plan that phases out stoves, heaters, and furnaces by 2030.
But when the cameras clicked at a ribbon-cutting for Boston’s first office-to-apartment conversion at 281 Franklin Street, there was Wu, grinning ear to ear beside a gleaming gas range.

You read that right: the same appliance her climate agenda treats like contraband was the star prop of her big photo-op.
Instead of induction burners and climate-friendly optics, the model unit showed off a full gas stovetop — and Wu didn’t flinch. In fact, she looked thrilled.
It’s a bad look for a mayor who signed an executive order barring fossil fuels in new municipal projects and promised a “fossil-free” public housing future. Ordinary Bostonians are told to give up their flame, while Wu’s photo ops keep it burning bright.
Critics call it classic political theater — climate sermons for the masses, but smiles for the cameras when a shiny kitchen set is on hand. “Gas stoves are banned for you, but fine for Wu,” one wag sniped online.
Boston’s Climate Action Plan 2030 promises 100% renewable energy by the end of the decade. But for now, the blue flame in Wu’s photo might be the most honest light in the room.
