TAUNTON—It was the kind of text no sister should ever receive. Late one night, 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro, just 11 weeks pregnant, sent a chilling message: “He threw me on the ground, pulled my hair and strangled me. My phone’s at 4 percent. If I die, it was Greg.”
Days later, police would dig up her body from a freshly carved grave — 5 feet down, hidden in the woods behind her boyfriend’s grandparents’ Rehoboth home.
And on Wednesday, the boyfriend in question — 22-year-old Gregory Groom — shuffled into Taunton District Court, accused of killing the teenager who once trusted him with her future.
A Confession Too Gruesome to Ignore

At first, Groom played the part of the worried partner, calling police on August 8 to report Monteiro missing. He said she’d stopped by his home, argued with him, then stormed off. But the act didn’t hold.
Prosecutors revealed Groom confessed to far darker truths: he shoved Kylee during an argument on August 6, she hit her head, and the fight spiraled. He admitted knocking her phone away before grabbing a kitchen knife and stabbing her repeatedly.
The confession didn’t stop there. Groom coolly told police about digging a hole in the woods and leaving her there. Investigators later found her remains exactly where he described — a young life, and the unborn one she carried, dumped in a backyard grave.
Family’s Heartbreak, Courtroom Shock

In court, Kylee’s family clutched one another as prosecutors recounted the teen’s desperate final message.
“She was so loving and so caring, and I love her so much,” said family friend Kira Schofield, choking back tears. Kylee’s sister Faith sobbed, “Knowing that I lost my sister, and I will never see her again or tell her I love her…”
The courtroom fell silent as the prosecution read Kylee’s text aloud — her own voice testifying against her alleged killer from beyond the grave.
The Legal Theater Begins
Despite Groom’s alleged confessions, a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. The judge ordered him held without bail, with his next court date set for September 10.
For the Monteiro family, that’s weeks of waiting while the young man they believe stole Kylee’s future sits behind bars, claiming innocence in the eyes of the law.
A Quiet Town, Now Haunted
Rehoboth is no stranger to small-town stillness — horse farms, quiet woods, families who never lock their doors. But now, the town’s name is forever tied to a gruesome murder.

A pregnant teen. A boyfriend who allegedly turned into a monster. A grave dug in secret. And a haunting text message that may prove to be the most damning evidence of all:
“If I die, it was Greg.”
