BROCKTON — Chaos at Brockton High has gone from hallway brawls to full-blown scandal.
Matthew Cunningham, 35, the school’s choral director and president-elect of the Massachusetts Choral Directors Association, was arrested after the FBI says he paid an underage male for sex. The transaction, flagged on a money app, launched a months-long sting.
He pleaded not guilty, but was slapped with $25,000 bail, forced to surrender his passport, and banned from social media. He’s also been yanked from his teaching post while the district scrambles to calm furious parents.
It’s only the latest crisis. In 2024, Brockton School Committee members were so desperate over constant fights that they begged Governor Maura Healey to send in the National Guard. Healey refused, calling it “not appropriate.” Weeks later, staff ended up in the hospital with concussions and broken bones after trying to break up student brawls.
Now in 2025, Brockton High is back in the headlines — this time for a trusted educator accused of trafficking a teen. A status hearing is set for Thursday, with a probable cause hearing in September.
The once-proud music program is drowned out by scandal, and parents are asking how many more hits Brockton High can take.
