BOSTON — Boston was brought to its knees on Saturday as more than 100 riders on bicycles, scooters, and dirt bikes stormed the Zakim Bridge and poured into the I-93 tunnel — leaving furious commuters trapped in underground gridlock.

State Police tracked the mob from the air for hours as they weaved through traffic and blew past every law on the books. Drivers were warned not to engage — which is a polite way of saying: sit back, watch the circus, and hope the hoodlums don’t pick your lane.

The chaos reached its peak in the Seaport when a stolen dirt bike smashed into a police cruiser near D and Summer streets. A 22-year-old rider was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. The thief who ditched the stolen bike bolted on foot — proving Boston’s fastest getaway vehicle is still a pair of sneakers.

It is illegal to ride bicycles or dirt bikes on Massachusetts highways. But that didn’t stop the mob from hijacking Boston’s busiest artery, turning the I-93 tunnel into an underground stunt show. Horns blared, engines screamed, and families sat stranded as the city’s main route was transformed into Evel Knievel’s practice track.

Back in 2022, Mayor Michelle Wu shrugged off concerns, insisting riders were “young people… learning a skill” and “seeking community.” She said they were simply ‘looking for an outlet.’

On Saturday, that “outlet” looked a lot more like gridlock, chaos, and a wrecked police cruiser.

Boston’s outlet has officially blown a fuse.
