BOSTON â The gloves are off. The nationâs top law enforcement official just gave Boston and other so-called âsanctuaryâ havens until Tuesday to stop shielding illegal immigrants â including violent offenders and child predators â or face federal consequences.
Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday blasted out letters to 35 jurisdictions that limit cooperation with ICE, including Boston, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
âYou are hereby notified that your jurisdiction has been identified as one that engages in sanctuary policies and practices that thwart federal immigration enforcement to the detriment of the interests of the United States. This ends now,â Bondi wrote.
The letters demand a response by Tuesday, August 19, confirming compliance with federal law and detailing âimmediate initiativesâ to scrap policies that protect criminal aliens from deportation.

On Fox News Thursday night, Bondi was blunt:
âI sent out letters to all of these mayors and to the governors, saying, âYou must comply. We want to know what youâre doing to comply with our federal government.â So weâre going to see.â
Bostonâs sanctuary rules have already drawn national outrage after cases where ICE detainers were ignored â allowing dangerous offenders, including convicted child predators and violent criminals, to remain on the streets.
Mayor Michelle Wu, whose administration has championed sanctuary policies, shrugged off the ultimatum when pressed Friday:
âUnlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law.â
Wu has testified before Congress insisting her policies donât violate federal law but instead âpromote trust and safety.â But the feds see it differently â pointing to repeat cases where local officials refused to turn over rapists, drug traffickers, and illegal immigrants wanted for deportation.
Bondiâs letter doesnât spell out specific penalties if Boston and others dig in their heels â but warned that âfurther actionâ is on the table.
For Wu, itâs now a national showdown: her progressive âtrustâ policies versus a federal crackdown aimed at ending the sanctuary shield once and for all.
