Double Disaster: E-Bike Mows Down Pedestrian in Back Bay, Hours Later Scooter Rider Crushed in Roxbury

Two crashes, two victims, and growing questions about Boston’s “car-free” vision

BOSTON – It was a bloody Wednesday on Boston streets as two people were left clinging to life in separate crashes involving an electric bike and a scooter — just hours apart.

The first mayhem unfolded around 11:19 a.m. at the intersection of Huntington Avenue and Dartmouth Street, where an e-bike plowed into a pedestrian in the heart of Back Bay. The victim was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Boston Police.

The bike operator remained at the scene, and homicide detectives — typically called in when injuries are critical — are now investigating. No arrests have been made. Neither the pedestrian nor the rider has been identified.

Police initially described the vehicle as an e-scooter but later clarified it was an electric bicycle.

Less than two hours later, more carnage in Roxbury.

At 1:13 p.m., emergency crews responded to Humboldt Avenue and Seaver Street, where a scooter rider was struck by a motor vehicle. That victim was also hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The condition of both victims remains unknown as of Wednesday evening, and no identifying details have been released. The driver involved in the Roxbury crash has not been publicly named.

Together, the two crashes paint a grim picture of Boston’s increasingly chaotic streets — where pedestrians, cyclists, and motorized riders now share cramped space with little enforcement or clarity.

The twin incidents have reignited debate over Boston’s push for “car-free” zones, the surge in electric bikes and scooters, and the city’s patchwork traffic policies under Mayor Michelle Wu.

Mass Daily News will continue to track both investigations.
